تلحق بالأزهر المعاهد الأزهرية المذكورة فى اللائحة التنفيذية، ويجوز أن تنشأ معاهد أخرى بقرار من الوزير المختص بعد موافقة المجلس الأعلى للأزهر.
وتسمى الأقسام الابتدائية منها المعاهد الإعدادية للأزهر، وتسمى الأقسام الثانوية المعاهد الثانوية للأزهر.
